Philipp Thesen is a designer and strategist considered among the top thought leaders today in the areas of strategic design and digital transformation. He is a professor of human-system interaction at the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt. There, he founded the Human Factor Lab and conducts research at the intersection of design and digital technologies.
Thesen is also founder of Prenew, a strategy consultancy for digital change with offices in Zurich and Berlin. Prenew advises companies in the successful management of design for the transformation of products, processes and business models.
Previously, Thesen was Chief Designer at Deutsche Telekom AG. Responsible for the design of all products and digital services, he likewise oversaw the group’s design strategy in more than 20 countries. The magazine w&v named Thesen as one of the ten most important German strategists in 2018.
An award-winning designer, Thesen’s work has received over 200 national and international awards and accolades, including the ADC Award, Annual Multimedia, DDC, German Design Award, German Innovation Award, Good Design Chicago, International Design Awards Los Angeles, iF Design Award, Red Dot.
Thesen studied visual communication, industrial design and international design business management at the Cologne International School of Design, the Politecnico Milan and the University of Art and Design Helsinki. He held a scholarship from the German Academic Scholarship Foundation (Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes).
A member of the Art Directors Club and Advisory Board Member at the Design Management Institute Boston, Thesen is also actively involved in the German Design Council. A member of several expert juries, he is a sought-after conference speaker. He regularly publishes on design, business and digital innovation.
